When Death set about making his Court, he knew his creations must be as different from himself as possible, if they were to act as counterweight to his impulses. His firstborn, Gethsemoni, is certainly that. Beautiful, mercurial, a lover of intrigues of all kinds; she is also the first, and most accomplished, practitioner of necromancy. Like a mother, she can wound or heal with a look, and possesses an uncanny ability to learn the innermost secrets of one's heart with little effort.
As the head of the Faction of Flesh, she is the acknowledged master of her craft, a necromancer of unequaled precision and nuance. This gives her a unique place in the Underworld, as many consider Flesh to be a portal through which even those who were never mortal can better understand humanity.
Flesh is adaptable; it grows and changes, and can heal. So it is with Gethsemoni. She sees no contradiction in giving comfort with one hand while destroying with the other. She is the Queen of the Dead, a master of deception, a gentle mother, a wayward daughter; a walking contradiction who nonetheless moves with grace and dignity, full of self-confidence. The Reaper General Mortighull is far from a mirror image of his mentor, the resolute Demithyle. Mortighull is torn between his obligation to end the great celestial war... and tempted by darker urges. An Underworld champion conceived for a noble scheme, yet hammered by its cruel purpose, he revels in the thrill of combat but struggles with his compassion for the mortal souls that are unwillingly drawn into the Celestial war. Mortighull walks the knife's edge of a warrior who must bring about peace through destruction.
As a member of the Mortis Knights, Mortighull administers the reaping, holds it in check, and ensures it is carried out, even when it is most unsavory. These knights take no delight in the force that is often used during a reaping. Gifted with the rare ability to see etherea inside a mortal soul with an acuity just shy of Death's own, these warriors ensure the quota set by Heaven and Hell is met. Their duties, though, do not end when the harvest is done. They also have the obligation of hunting down any of their brethren, in the unfortunate instance that they are overtaken by the darkness inherent in their profession and become dangerous rogues. It is this last role that is the most difficult, for it reflects a reality that, if not careful, might overtake them all.
